Landstar honored the best and safest Landstar owner-operators during its 8th Annual Landstar BCO All-Star Celebration held earlier this month.
The event featured an awards program during which Landstar honored 176 business capacity owners (BCOs), the company’s term for independent owner-operators who provide transportation capacity under exclusive lease agreements.
During the ceremony, Landstar inducted 14 BCOs as Landstar Roadstar® recipients, 137 BCOs as new Million Mile Safe Drivers, 22 BCOs as Two Million Mile Safe Drivers, two BCOs as Three Million Mile Safe Drivers, and presented one BCO, Million Mile Safe Driver and Roadstar Art Trezise, with the company’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The select group of honorees were celebrated during a three-day event held in Savannah, Georgia. The annual event recognizes outstanding safety records and professionalism behind the wheel. The Class of 2018 is one of the largest classes of Million Mile Safe Drivers inducted in Landstar history. Each of the inductees has driven more than one million consecutive miles without a preventable accident.
“Landstar is proud to showcase one of its largest classes of Landstar Million Mile Safe Drivers and Roadstar honorees as the industry’s best,” said Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni. “Their skill and dedication is worthy of a celebration.”
Of the 1,043 active Landstar Million Mile Safe Drivers, 14 individuals were awarded with the Roadstar distinction during the 2019 celebration. The Roadstar honor is one of Landstar’s highest awards for owner-operators who are chosen for their high levels of safety, productivity and excellence in customer service. Each of the 14 Roadstar inductees previously earned the Million Mile Safe Driver status. The new Roadstar class raises the total number of active Landstar Roadstar recipients to 176.
Landstar began presenting the Roadstar award in 1990.
“Landstar Roadstar recipients raise the bar for the entire trucking industry,” said Gattoni. “Their dedication to service and excellence has earned them the right to be called the most elite independent business capacity owners at Landstar.”

Before Landstar owner-operator Deb LaBree embarked on a career in the trucking industry, she enjoyed helping others through her work in cosmetology and sales. LaBree didn’t become a professional truck driver until later in life. While her career took a big turn, her personality stayed the course as she climbed into the driver’s seat.
“There’s no greater feeling than helping people. It’s always been in my nature. I think people reach out to me with questions because I make them feel comfortable,” explains Landstar Business Capacity Owner (BCO) Deb LaBree.
When she became an over-the-road team driver with her husband Del, LaBree says she never imagined her trucking career would take her down the path of advising or coaching other owner-operators. The BCO laughed out loud when asked for a count of the number of drivers she’s mentored over the years.
“I can’t keep track. I just do it. I’ve always liked to help people and encourage them to do well in whatever they are trying to accomplish,” says LaBree, whose official work mentoring women began when she volunteered for the nonprofit organization Women in Trucking (WIT).
A WIT board member and administrator of the organization’s Facebook page, LaBree says she started by mentoring a few women who were new to the trucking industry.
“I’d help them apply for scholarships to help pay for truck driving school. When they finished school, I’d help them apply for their first over-the-road jobs,” says LaBree. “Many of them have become close friends, and some of them even call me ‘Momma Deb.’”
LaBree says she didn’t realize how impactful her advice to fellow drivers was until September 2018 when she was selected to appear on a national network television show during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW).
That week, LaBree traveled to New York City to appear on NBC’s Megyn Kelly Today. LaBree spoke candidly with Kelly about life on the road and being a female owner-operator in the transportation industry. Then, near the end of the segment, Kelly shocked LaBree by presenting her with a $10,000 check from segment sponsor Shell Rotella.
“After that segment aired, I heard from hundreds of professional drivers from coast to coast. Some were Landstar BCOs congratulating me, others were complete strangers who saw the segment and had questions of their own,” says LaBree. “It was incredible to hear from so many people within the industry and to offer them my advice.”
The segment also included a taped interview with one of LaBree’s mentees, Landstar BCO team driver Pam Kays, who spoke to NBC about her relationship with LaBree. Kays had originally contacted LaBree through Facebook four years ago when Kays was a new BCO looking for some advice from someone already leased to Landstar.
“Deb has helped me with paperwork and procedures over the years, anything I’ve needed. She is the kind of person who would literally give you the shirt off her back if you needed it,” explains Kays. “That mentorship has transpired into a true friendship.”
Despite their busy lifestyles, LaBree and Kays still find ways to connect. When they are out on long hauls and in the same area of the country, the two make it a point to meet – even if it’s for a quick hug at a truck stop.
“Through kindness, Del and I have met great people and built some beautiful friendships over the years,” says LaBree. “Everything we do to help our fellow owner-operators, is because we don’t want people go through the same struggles we did when we first started out on the road. Aside from that, it just feels great to help others.”

Landstar’s first truck giveaway of 2019 is just a few weeks away. The annual Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway sponsored by Pilot/Flying J will happen Thursday, Jan. 24, during Landstar’s BCO Appreciation Days event in Jacksonville, Florida.
One of Landstar’s nearly 10,000 independent owner-operators (BCOs), will drive home from the event in a new 2019 Peterbilt 579 UltraLoft. The UltraLoft, Peterbilt’s newest version of the 579, was released in 2018, designed and tested with driver experience in mind.
The giveaway truck, features a 450-HP Cummins X15 engine with an Eaton Endurant 12-speed automated transmission. The truck’s 80″ sleeper and spacious cab, designed for optimal driver comfort and efficiency, is touted by its maker to provide an estimated 2-percent aerodynamic improvement.
Also equipped with the Bendix® Wingman® Fusion™ integrated system, the truck’s technology uses a combination of camera, radar and brake system, to offer professional drivers a new level of safety. The Wingman Fusion system compliments safe driving by using a detailed data picture to alert a driver of potential road debris, impacts, lane departures and speed limitations.
During each Deliver to Win contest period, BCOs earn entries for the giveaway by hauling safe and compliant loads. Additional entries are earned by BCOs who voluntarily participate in Landstar safety meetings, events and business classes, as well as monthly online contest entries through DeliverToWin.com. During the 2019 contest period (Jan. 1, 2018 – Nov. 30, 2018), BCOs earned more than 217,000 entries.
The Landstar Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway, sponsored by Pilot/Flying J, will be held on the first night of the two-day event in Jacksonville, Florida, Jan. 24 and 25. Landstar BCO Appreciation Day events are held throughout each year to thank Landstar BCOs for their service, dedication and commitment to safety.
